Jaguar’s hybrid concept

Part of the UK government-funded project ‘Limo-Green’. The goal of the project was to develop and build a series hybrid luxury sedan. The 2010 Jaguar XJ limo-green uses an electric motor for propulsion, in this case a 145 kW, 295 lb-ft unit. A lithium battery pack moves the car for 30 miles on a charge and then the Lotus-developed 1.2-liter range extender takes over for the remainder of the 600-mile range.

McLaren MP4-12C

The MP4-12C is built around an extremely light and rigid carbon fiber tub. The body panels are all carbon fiber and composites, making the new McLaren more expensive to build than its competitors and resulting in an expected £160,000 ($265k) price tag – higher than either the new Ferrari 458 Italia or the Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4, but lighter in weight, too.

Behind the tub sits a twin-turbo 3.8-liter V8 engine producing around 600 horsepower and 433 lb-ft of torque. The bespoke mill features a flat-plane crank, dry sump and can rev up to 8,500 rpm, though 80% of the torque is said to be available from as low as 2,000 rpm. That ought to be good for a 0-60 time in the low threes and a 200+ mph top end.

With the new MP4-12C, McLaren’s betting the economy will bounce back soon. It’s planning on building 1000 units in 2011, a quarter of which will go each to the domestic UK market and over to the United States.

Mazda MX-5 Superlight concept

Conceived and created as a way to celebrate the MX-5 Miata’s 20th anniversary, the Superlight’s new profile and 2,194-pound curb weight is the brainchild of the automaker’s European R&D center in Oberursel, Germany.

The most obvious change to the Superlight is its speedster profile, which involved removing the windshield, retractable roof and frame. From there, Mazda’s European team extended the aluminum hood towards the cabin and mounted an aluminum, wide-angle rear-view mirror, along with a set of roll-over hoops fitted with LED brake lights.

Saab 9-5 hybrid

Saab’s first production hybrid powertrain will match diesel fuel economy numbers while providing lower emissions and competitive performance. It seems Saab will pair an electric motor with excellent torque characteristics right from idle with a highly-tuned 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that puts out 120 horsepower. That gasoline-fed powerplant should be able to manage good power at higher engine speeds, making for adequate overall acceleration across the rev range. If there’s any truth to this rumor, Saab is planning to use a relatively small battery pack that’s not expected to power the car for long periods of time.

SPYSHOT 2011 Infiniti QX56

The 2011 Infiniti QX56 went on display in the Middle East and some stealthy soul caught a couple of close-up pics from the front and rear three-quarter. It’s a much smoother vehicle than the old one, ditching the arcs for hard angles. It also sheds finicky styling cues like the current vehicle’s slightly contorted C-pillar arrangement, going for an uninterrupted window line rimmed by a chrome strip. Head on, though, it’s grille-tastic.

Body elements like flaring arches are more integrated, and the chrome strip running down the side has been omitted. The rear is an FX-ified version of the new Nissan Patrol, and the package rides on anice set of Infiniti’s trademark wheels. We aren’t sure if it will turn the QX56′s sales numbers around, but stranger things have happened.

2010 Toyota  4Runner

Those anxiously awaiting the scheduled September 24 reveal of the 2010 Toyota 4Runner are going to want to take a good look at the pictures below, which contains a few more high-resolution images of the Japanese automaker’s body-on-frame SUV.

As we noted the last time we saw spy shots, the next 4Runner will push forward with a boxy, square-jawed look that reinforces this SUV as the rugged, off-road capable midsizer in Toyota’s lineup, leaving the unibody Highlander and Venza to take on the rest of the burgeoning CUV crowd.

When the 2010 4Runner hits the market, it will be equipped with the buyers choice of either a 161-horsepower four-cylinder or a 268-horsepower six. The current V8 engine option will no longer be available, but Toyota promises its ‘ute will be more luxurious and capable than ever before.

2011 Rolls-Royce Ghost

Rolls-Royce has officially dropped dozens of images and plenty of details on its new “baby” saloon, the Ghost. The new Roller won’t be seen publicly for another week, when it’ll formally bow in Frankfurt, but we now know that its 6.6-liter V12 generates an impressive 575 lb-ft of torque at 1,500 rpm, along with 563 horsepower in U.S. trim. The 212.6-inch body stretches over a 129.7 inch long wheelbase, and the whole car weighs in at 5,445 pounds unloaded.

There are no surprises in the styling, which is unchanged from the 200EX concept displayed in Geneva last March. naturally, the Ghost retains the Phantom-style coach doors (don’t call them suicide in the presence of a Rolls rep) with built-in umbrellas. Inside, the Ghost carries over additional Phantom quirks, such as the “Power Reserve” gauge the driver gets in lieu of a traditional tachometer. Aside from that, this is clearly more of a driver’s car than the Phantom, whose opulent backseat accommodations show that it’s more about being driven in. The Ghost’s steering wheel is much smaller in diameter and has a thicker rim than its big brother, and the seats appear to have more contouring for lateral support, as well. Pricing hasn’t been announced yet, but plan on bringing a Halliburton attache case full of cash if you plan on buying one, just to be on the safe side.
